We are an independent, non-profit charity organisation specialising in providing free or low cost SEL training for teachers, staff and parents of early childhood, primary and secondary schools.

What is "SEL"?

"Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. "

– The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)

Research has shown that

1/2 of all mental health conditions emerge by the age of 14, with 3/4 emerging by 24 years of age.

the benefits

Our SEL programs deliver a profound experience that has a significant, positive impact on participants' personal and professional lives both in the short and long term.

Students and schools benefit indirectly from the advanced understanding and practice of SEL by teachers, staff and parents.

Young people who are grounded, self reliant and can think for themselves are far less likely to be one of the alarming growing numbers who are anxious, depressed, self harm or take their own lives.

People with a high level of social and emotional development are more likely to:

  • Identify and work towards something that has meaning, purpose and passion for them

  • Push through a big problem, barrier or challenge

  • Notice and change an unhealthy or limiting habit or situation

  • Inspire people around them

  • Apologise when they are wrong

  • Ask for help when they need it

  • Forgive someone's weakness or shortcoming

  • Help someone believe in themselves again

Benefits for Teachers/Staff/Parents

  • Improved capability to teach SEL explicitly and be a role model

  • Less stress/more confidence through greater self awareness and enhanced self management

  • Stronger engagement, connections, communications and relationships with others

  • Improved student behaviour and happier, calmer classrooms

  • Enhanced academic focus, improved grades/test scores

  • Stronger parent relationships with more collaboration and less conflict

  • Increased wellbeing, resilience and mental health of students that will last a lifetime

Benefits for Students

  • Improved life confidence, identity and self worth for strength on the inside to deal with a fast changing world on the outside

  • More positive social behaviours

  • Improved relationships with other students and teachers

  • Learn new habits to manage themselves for better results in all areas of their lives

Benefits for Schools

  • Builds capacity of mental health, resilience and wellbeing across the whole school

  • Stronger school climate and improved relationships and communication between teachers, students and parents

  • Develops a shared vision of the concepts, language and benefits of SEL in key stakeholder groups

  • Builds a strategic competitive advantage into the fabric of the school community

Educators who have been trained to explore their own resilience and emotional wellbeing are more likely to facilitate students’ social and emotional learning more effectively... yet few programs exist to help with this.

LEARN WHAT WE OFFER

about us

SELschools is being established as an independent, non-profit charity organisation specialising in providing free or low cost SEL training for teachers, staff and parents of early childhood, primary and secondary schools.

In the not-too-distant past, life was a lot slower, simpler and more predictable. People had more time to adapt to change.

The pace, complexity and uncertainty of our fast changing world can be  challenging for young people, with mental health issues - depression, anxiety, suicide - at record levels and rising.

While many schools are implementing various resilience, wellbeing and mental health initiatives to counter this growing problem, we strongly believe that additional intensive and ongoing SEL training for teachers and other adult stakeholders is vital to the success of these initiatives.

To this end, SELschools will provide free or low cost SEL training to schools with funds it generates from its charity activities.

"Social and emotional learning (SEL)... can educate hearts, inspire minds, and help students navigate the world more effectively." - CASEL

our programs

To complement online learning that is often provided, SELschools practical and interactive small group workshops provide a broader, deeper and more personal understanding and experience of SEL so teachers and others can better lead students to develop their mental health.

Our SEL programs are the product of 20 years experience in evidence-based behavioural sciences including Emotional Intelligence, Positive Psychology, Neuroscience and Social and Emotional Learning.

Subsidised SEL workshops of 1 to 3 hours, half day, full day and multi-day are available for small groups.

Complementary follow-up coaching is offered to participants of full day and multi-day workshops.
